WAH-WAH Australia & the Art Gallery of New South Wales have teamed up with Doris Bush Nungarrayi to transform one of Australia’s most captivating contemporary artworks into an oversized, wearable universe of colour, spirits and story.

Working from Papunya in the Northern Territory, Doris Bush Nungarrayi is renowned for her vivid storytelling and emotionally charged paintings inspired by memory, dreams and the spirit world of her Country. Her works pulse with personality, energy and a sense of mystery, blending humour and tension in ways that are uniquely her own.

Made from 100% merino wool, this striking knit features details from Mamunya ngalyananyi (Monster coming), Doris Bush Nungarrayi’s 2023 Sulman Prize-winning work. The painting, depicts several Mamus (or “cheeky ones”)— spirit beings known to shapeshift and hide in underground dwellings or hollow trees. Through this collaboration with WAH-WAH Australia, the artwork escapes its original medium, taking on a new life in knit form. The cheeky ones have officially escaped the canvas!
